Week 2 - Kansas (1-0) @ #21 Nevada (1-0) Result: Kansas 28 Nevada 23

They Jayhawks headed into their week 2 matchup against the Nevada Wolfpack with an upset on their minds. They knew they would have their hands full containing the vaunted Nevada pistol offense, but they were confident they were up to the task.

They Jayhawks did not disappoint as they started off the game by forcing a turnover on downs for the Wolfpack and then driving down to score a 10-yard touchdown on a pass to Johnathan Wilson. The Wolfpack answered right back with a touchdown of their own however, tying the game on a 15-yard run from L Mark.

Nevada took an early second quarter lead as they scored on a pass to D Roberts from the goal line. It looked as if the game might get away from the Jayhawks as they were forced to punt after just three plays on their next possession, but the defense was able to hold strong and get them the ball back.

Kansas was able to tie the game with just over a minute to go in the half on a 6-yard run from D.J. Beshears. The Wolfpack, trying to get in field goal range before half, had a huge miscue as Jayhawks' linebacker Steven Johnson was able to come completely free to quarterback M Magleby. Johnson not only got the sack but forced a funble as well. The other Kansas outside linebacker was there as well, picking up the fumble and returning it 42 yards for the touchdown; putting the Jayhawks up 7 going into halftime.

The Jayhawks had a chance to build up a comfortable lead as they got the ball to start the second half. The Nevada defense came out fired up however and refused to allow any points. On Nevada's first possession, they drove the length of the field, getting down to the Kansas 1-yard line where they faced a 1st and goal. The Kansas defense came up huge, stopping them on three straight downs and forcing them to kick a field goal.

The Jayhawks, now only up by 4 and with over a whole quarter to go, knew they were going to have to score again. Beshears wasted no time in orchestrating another touchdown drive, taking it in himself from 20 yards out just before the third quarter ended.

The Jayhawks' defense played remarkably well in the fourth quarter stalling the first two Wolfpack drives. The Jayhawks the squandered an opportunity that had a chance to come back an bite them as they missed a 33-yard field goal to go up by 14. That missed field goal looked like it might be the difference as Nevada would not be denied again and Roberts caught his second touchdown of the day, this time from 3 yards out. After a failed 2-point conversion, the Wolfpack were still down 5 with just over 2 minutes remaining.

With all three timeouts remaining, the Wolfpack elected to kick the ball and trust their defense to get them the ball back. It proved to be the right decision. The Wolfpack defense held the Jayhawks to another 3-and out, getting their offense the ball back with exactly 2 minutes remaining.

The Kansas defense stepped up big, bringing up a 3rd and 4. A short pass looked as if it was going to gain the first down, but a good play by Kansas middle linebacker Huldon Tharp stopped the receiver just short to bring up 4th and inches. Forced to go for it, the Wolfpack called a power run play right up the gut. The Jayhawks were prepared as Tharp again came up huge as he came right through the gap untouched to bring down the ballcarrier for a loss and a turnover on downs, securing the win.

Next week the Jayhawks (2-0) face the #2 Wisconsin Badgers (1-0). The Jayhawks have been waiting for this game all offseason, getting a shot at the #2 team in the nation on national television and a chance for revenge from a 3-point loss last year in Madison. Coach Jhawk is very excited about his team this season, "We are a much better team than we were last year. We have all of our best players playing this season at their best positions. We are going to be a very tough team to beat. Hopefully we can start making some noise with a win next week over the Badgers."

Week 3 - #24 Kansas (2-0) vs. #2 Wisconsin (1-0) Result: Kansas 34 Wisconsin 14

In a rematch of last year's thrilling 31-28 loss in Madison to the Wisconsin Badgers, the Jayhawks, with the home-field advantage this time, vowed to get revenge and give the #2 team in the nation their first loss of the season.

The game started out rather slow as the Badgers received the opening kickoff and were forced to punt as their drive stalled around midfield. Kansas took possession and marched right down the field. The Badger defense would stiffen up however, and they held the Jayhawks to just a field goal.

Both teams traded punts until Wisconsin put together a nice drive of their own. Converting on multiple critical third downs on their way to a 5-yard touchdown run by James White with just 22 seconds left on the clock to take a 7-3 lead.

Rather than take a knee and head into halftime down by just 4, coach Jhawk wanted to see if his Hawks could maybe pull within one before the half ended with a field goal. They caught a break as Wisconsin boomed the kickoff into the endzone and returner DeShaun Sands fair caught the ball to prevent any time from running off the clock. Starting from the 20, the Jayhawks moved the ball quickly downfield and into Badger territory on the heels of two option runs by D.J. Beshears. The Jayhawks, at the Wisconsin 37 had 10 seconds to get within field goal range. The next play, Beshears found a wide open Johnathan Wilson crossing across the middle with room to run. Wilson, rather than run out of bounds and allow the field goal unit to come on, saw that there was space in front of him and decided to try and take it to the endzone. He spun away from one defender and worked his way inside the 10. He got hit at the 5 and was pushed out of bounds at the 4-yard line with 1 second left on the clock. Coach Jhawk quickly called a timeout and then had a difficult decision to make. He decided to take a gamble and go for the touchdown. Set up in the wishbone, Beshears took the snap and rolled to his right on an option with Sands. Beshears was hit at the line of scrimmage and in a last ditch effort to score, heaved the ball high and outside allowing Sands enough time to run underneath it and carry it in for a touchdown with no time remaining. Coach Jhawk on the play, "Somehow he threw it past [the defender] and then it sailed forever... I have no idea how that worked."

Coming out in the second half with a 3 point lead and the momentum from the end of the first, the Jayhawks took the ball and immediately went down and scored. Johnathan Wilson recorded his second big play of the day, hauling in the touching on a 7-yard pass just over a minute into the quarter. After another Badger punt, Kansas wasted little time again as Beshears took an option 50 yards for a score of his own.

The Badgers then put together a nice drive of their own, driving down into Kansas territory, unfortunately for them, Curt Phillips' pass feel just short of his intended target and wound up in the arms of Kansas senior corner, Anthony Davis. The Badger defense came up big though, as they forced a quick three-and-out.

Trailing 27-7 with under 2 minutes to play in the 3rd quarter, the Badgers looked as if they were down for the count. Coach Tbuck would not let his players give up though, as they, utilizing the hurry up offense, orchestrated a methodical 9-play 52 yard drive capped off with another 5-yard touchdown run from White as time expired.

Starting off the 4th quarter the Badger defense held strong again as they forced the Jayhawks into another three-and-out. On first down, Kansas senior defensive end Jake Laptad came up huge with his 2nd sack of the day, for an 11-yard loss. After an incomplete pass on 2nd down, the Badgers faced 3rd and 21 and were forced to throw deep. Phillips overthrew Nick Toon down the middle and Jayhawks' senior safety Chris Harris intercepted it, giving them the ball in great field position.

The Badger defense again wouldn't budge, but the Jayhawks were already in field goal range and so increased their lead to 13 with just over 5 minutes left. Once again, Phillips drove the Badgers down the field and into Kansas territory, but once again he was intercepted, this time by middle linebacker Huldon Tharp.

This time the Jayhawks would not be bottled up and scored on a 72-yard run by Sands on just the second play of the drive. Sands came in for the injured James Sims who will be out at least the next 2 weeks.

The Badgers, trailing by 20 with 4 minutes left, still refused to give up. Tharp came up with another huge play though, grabbing his second interception in as many drives, sealing the victory for the Jayhawks.

After the game, coach Jhawk attributed the win to his players playing their hearts out. "Our players played amazing today; I couldn't be more proud of them. If it wasn't for that score at the end of the first half I think it may have been a much different second half because Wisconsin would have been able to play their game rather than have to try and throw a lot. After the loss to them last year in Madison, and how we finished out the year, this win feels great. We'll celebrate this tonight and then move on to prepare for next week."

Next week the Jayhawks will face another top-5 opponent and the defending National Champions in the Penn State Nittany Lions. They beat the Nittany Lions last season, but that was in the friendly confines of Lawrence; next week's game will be played in one of the toughest venues in all the nation, "Happy Valley"; the Jayhawks will have their hands full.
